The Arlington County Commission on Aging advises the Arlington County Board and the Arlington Agency on Aging on aging issues. The Commission is a 15-member council of people who live or work in Arlington. The County Board appoints its members. The Commission elects its own officers. Members serve on the committee(s) of their choices, and also as liaisons to local, regional, and state organizations.
Responsibilities of the Commission on Aging include:
Provide a link with the community and with public and private agencies engaged in the delivery of services to older persons.
Serve as an advocate for plans and actions in the interest of older persons.
Foster community awareness of the problems of older persons and the community resources they represent.
Review and comment on community policies, programs, and actions which affect older persons.
Convene an annual public hearing to present the Area Plan (48K PDF format) as proposed in the County Budget and to receive public comments.
A term of service is 3 years, with two consecutive terms allowed. Prospective members are interviewed by current Commission members and recommended to the Arlington County Board, who makes the appointments. Each year at the end of September, approximately one-third of Commission members reach the end of their terms. Some are eligible for reappointment. Each spring, the Commission begins recruitment to replace those who will not be re-appointed. Interviews with interested parties typically are held during May and June. Also, if any member resigns during the year, at that time the Commission will begin the process to fill the vacancy.
The Commission hopes that you will be interested in bringing your talents and expertise to the Commission on Aging as a way of helping Arlington remain and continue to improve as a community that cares about the needs of its older residents. You can complete and submit an application for membership by clicking on the application link in the Related Resources box on this page after the words "JOIN US!"
