The role of the Human Rights Commission is outlined in Chapter 31-1, Arlington County Code, "...to ensure the protection and enforcement of human and civil rights for all people living or working in Arlington County by the elimination of and provision of remedies for discriminatory practices."
What are the functions of the Commission? As a result of the efforts of Board Member William T. Newman, Jr. and others, the Arlington County Board established the Arlington Human Rights Commission on July 1, 1989 when it enacted the Human Rights Ordinance. The Commission is comprised of nine Arlington residents appointed by the County Board who are representative of the diverse population living and working in Arlington. The Commission's goal is to eliminate all forms of unlawful discrimination in Arlington County.
The Commission's primary responsibility is to receive, investigate, and conciliate complaints from persons who believe they have been victims of unlawful discrimination. This is a free public service. The Commission's investigative and hearing processes usually result in resolution of complaints. If necessary, however, the Commission can, with County Board approval, seek enforcement of its decisions in court.
The Commission meets with community groups to discuss human rights issues affecting life in Arlington County. The Commission offers technical assistance to employers, landlords, realtors, and educational institutions regarding the scope and requirements of the Ordinance.
