- At its December 10, 2011 meeting, the County Board adopted a Zoning Ordinance amendment to permit sidewalk signs (sandwich boards), umbrellas signs and way finding parking signs. See the adopted provisions.
- Staff continues to refine the recommendations in the draft of the full sign regulations, based upon feedback received.
- The Zoning Committee of the Planning Commission (ZOCO) will review the draft amendment.
- A comments matrix will be developed to include staff responses as ZOCO reviews each topic.
- June 2012: Request to Advertise comprehensive revisions to sign regulations
- July 2012: Consideration of comprehensive revisions to sign regulations
Background
A work plan for updating the Arlington County Zoning Ordinance was accepted by the County Board to update the Zoning Ordinance in two phases, starting with a comprehensive update of the sign regulations in 2011

Goals for Amended Sign Regulations:
- Ensure compliance with Virginia Code and other legal requirements
- Incorporate best practices in sign regulation and clarify Arlington-specific practices
- Reformat the Ordinance in a user-friendly, graphic-oriented design and structure
- Make the regulations easier to understand and use
- Make the regulations easier to administer and enforce
- Reduce the frequency with which issues require County Board attention
Zoning Committee of the Planning Commission (ZOCO) Review ZOCO reviews and provides comments on all Zoning Ordinance amendments, and will review proposed sign regulations following its regular process, through twice monthly meetings. Proposed staff revisions to each subsection of the draft will be posted prior to the ZOCO meeting on each topic.

| Outreach Public outreach for the sign regulations review is designed to engage a variety of stakeholders through several formats. Public Forums. Three public forums were held in order to solicit feedback from all interested participants in a mixed stakeholder setting, through small group discussions and group dialogues. Focus Groups. Focus groups were convened with business, industry, development, and citizen groups in order to facilitate informal dialogues among stakeholders who share similar interests.
