On Saturday, September 15, 2012 - The Arlington County Board approved a plan to demolish a block-long, outdated and vacant office building in the heart of Crystal City and replace it with a Class-A, 24-story office building with ground floor retail and a half-acre interim park.  This will be:

The applicant (Vornado/Charles E. Smith) has proposed a series of applications for the purpose of permitting the development of a 24-story office building with ground floor retail use.  Specifically, this proposal is  to:

  • demolish the Mall III office building (401,935 sf) 
  • replace it with a 24-story building consisting of ground floor retail (11,290 sf) and up to 719,704 sf of office space.

This proposal is the first site plan filed subsequent to the adoption of the Crystal City Sector Plan.  In conformance with the provisions of the “C-O-Crystal City” zoning district, the applicant has filed a Crystal City Block Plan which analyzes development options for ultimate redevelopment of the entire block.
