Columbia Pike Utility Undergrounding is Underway

On June 28, Arlington began utility undergrounding construction work along Columbia Pike from S. Wakefield St. to Four Mile Run. Crews will work during both day and night hours to relocate water and sewer utilities during the summer months. A gas line will also be relocated and all overhead utilities will be placed underground. Motorist and transit riders should expect delays along the west end of Columbia Pike and, if possible, avoid the area. Periodic lane closures will be necessary, however at least one lane in each direction will be open throughout the project. Local transit will continue to run as scheduled along the Pike. However, riders should check http://www.commuterpage.com/ regularly for transit updates as construction may impact stops or routes in the future. County staff is working with businesses in the immediate work area to ensure that customers continue to have access during construction. The utility work will last about 15 months. Streetscape improvement work is expected to begin in summer 2011.

Long-term Lane Closure on Arlington Blvd. - Expect Delays, Consider Alternate Routes

From March 1 until July, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will close the left travel lane of westbound Arlington Boulevard from Courthouse Road to 10th Street for a utility relocation project. Additional temporary lane closures are anticipated to occur throughout the project as needed.

The VDOT utility work is the first step in a longer term project to address the dangerous intersection at Arlington Boulevard and Courthouse Road. VDOT has determined that it is necessary to  close the left lane of westbound Arlington Blvd. in order to:

  • Ensure safety of traveling motorists
  • Ensure safety of workers on site
  • Significantly decrease the time-span of the project (without a continual lane closure the project could last nearly twice as long)
  • Reduce the overall project costs

Expect traffic delays and detours in the area during this time. Commuters are strongly encouraged to consider alternate routes or take transit. For more information on available transit options, visit http://www.commuterpage.com/. To learn about the challenges at this interchange, check out this video.
