On June 28, Arlington began utility undergrounding construction work along Columbia Pike from S. Wakefield St. to Four Mile Run. Crews will work during both day and night hours to relocate water and sewer utilities during the summer months. A gas line will also be relocated and all overhead utilities will be placed underground. Motorist and transit riders should expect delays along the west end of Columbia Pike and, if possible, avoid the area. Periodic lane closures will be necessary, however at least one lane in each direction will be open throughout the project. Local transit will continue to run as scheduled along the Pike. However, riders should check http://www.commuterpage.com/ regularly for transit updates as construction may impact stops or routes in the future. County staff is working with businesses in the immediate work area to ensure that customers continue to have access during construction. The utility work will last about 15 months. Streetscape improvement work is expected to begin in summer 2011.
