Arlington Remembers September 11, 2001

Visit the Pentagon Memorial

The Pentagon Memorial commemorates the 184 men, women and children who died on Sept. 11, 2001 when terrorists slammed American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon. Fifty-nine passengers and crew on board the plane lost their lives that day, along with 125 military and civilian personnel at the Pentagon. They were among the nearly 3,000 people killed in attacks on the Pentagon, the World Trade Center and on a plane that crashed in Shanksville, Pa. that day.

The Pentagon Memorial is free and open to the public 24 hours a day, including Sept. 11. Guided tours are not offered; the Memorial is meant to be experienced on a more personal level. The Pentagon Memorial is located at 1 Rotary Road on the Pentagon Reservation in Arlington and is easily accessed by Metro.

Arlington County is no longer holding our annual bell-ringing ceremony, in order to support the Pentagon Memorial.

Moment of Silence and Flags Across Arlington

Please join us in a moment of silence at 9:37 a.m., to remember the 184 victims of this tragic event. Arlington County will hang U.S. flags from overpasses and buildings and asks that building managers and residents hang flags in a display of "Flags Across Arlington."

Author Talk at Central Library, Sept. 10

Diane Putney of the history office of the Secretary of Defense discusses "Pentagon 9/11," a documented history based on more than 1300 interviews about the attack on the Pentagon. This event, co-sponsored by the Arlington Historical Society and Arlington Public Library, takes place Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. in Arlington Central Library Auditorium.  Learn more about this author event>>>

United We Serve -- National Day of Service and Remembrance

This summer, President Obama and the First Lady launched the United We Serve initiative, calling on everyone to get involved in service. This initiative will culminate in a National Day of Service and Remembrance on September 11, 2009, but it is not meant to be short term.  We hope that during this Summer of Service you will find a volunteer opportunity that is a good fit for your skills, interests, and abilities and will empower you to make a meaningful impact in our community. Visit Volunteer Arlington to find the right volunteer opportunity for you!

9/11 Audio Histories

Arlington supports a StoryCorps project to collect audio histories of Sept. 11, as part of the National September 11 Memorial and Museum at the World Trade Center in New York.

Emergency Management and the 9-11 Attacks

Arlington first responders managed the incident command and response to the 9-11 attack on the Pentagon. The U.S. Department of Justice hailed the County’s management of the response, and the 9-11 Commission called Arlington’s performance a "model for the nation."

“The response to the 9-11 terrorist attack on the Pentagon was mainly a success for three reasons,” the 9-11 Commission concluded in its final report: “First, the strong professional relationships and trust established among emergency responders; second, the adoption of the Incident Command System; and third, the pursuit of a regional approach to response.”
