Surf the Web without Wires @ Arlington’s Courthouse Plaza

Wireless@Courthouse is Arlington County’s first, free outdoor wi-fi hotspot

ARLINGTON, Va. – Surf’s up at Courthouse Plaza, dude! But leave your boogie board at home. You’ll need a laptop to ride this wireless wave.

Come groove to live beach music by the Hula Monsters and check out Arlington County’s first free, outdoor wireless Internet hotspot on Saturday, Aug. 27, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Courthouse Plaza. You could be the lucky person to win an Apple iPod or other giveaways. Partners in the event include Charles E. Smith Commercial Realty and merchants in the Courthouse area.

“Providing wireless Internet access in our public spaces adds to the vibrancy of our tech-savvy community,” said County Board Chairman Jay Fisette. “By attracting more people to this ‘electronic town square,’ Wireless@Courthouse benefits our residents, visitors and businesses, alike.” Arlington recently was named one of the Top 10 Digital Counties in the United States in an annual survey by the Center for Digital Government and National Association of Counties (NACo).

Wireless@Courthouse builds on the success of the popular wi-fi hotspot at the County’s Central Library, launched last year. Courthouse Plaza is adjacent to the County Government Center, at 2100 Clarendon Blvd., and is accessible by Metrorail at the Court House Station on the Orange Line.

Wi-Fi in Arlington
Future plans call for broadband hotspots at the new Shirlington Library and Westover Library. And the County is exploring partnerships with the private sector to provide free or reduced cost wireless Internet access in some of its parks and community centers. Wireless@Courthouse will serve as something of a laboratory, providing the County with insight into what to look for in private partners.

Amid the bustle of the County’s weekly Farmers’ Market at Courthouse Plaza, bring your wireless-enabled laptop or other device and surf the Web to your heart’s content. When your computer looks for a wireless network to join, choose “arlingtonwireless.”

No worries about wipeouts here. Come “hang 10” at Courthouse Plaza – 10 fingers on your keyboard, that is.

###

Arlington, Va., is a world-class residential, business and tourist location that was originally part of the “10 miles square” parcel of land surveyed in 1791 to be the Nation's Capital. It is the geographically smallest self-governing county in the United States, occupying slightly less than 26 square miles. Arlington maintains a rich variety of stable neighborhoods, quality schools and enlightened land use, and received the Environmental Protection Agency’s highest award for “Smart Growth” in 2002. Home to some of the most influential organizations in the world – including the Pentagon – Arlington stands out as one of America’s preeminent places to live, visit and do business.
