2013-2014 Vehicle Decal Design Competition

The winner will be revealed at the January 29th meeting of the County Board.

This October, the Arlington County Treasurers Office extended an invitation to all high school students residing in Arlington to submit designs for the annual Vehicle Decal Design Competition. This year's competition was different than years past, as students were allowed to choose their background color, and the competition this year had a theme: the USS ARLINGTON.

The USS ARLINGTON (LPD 24) is one of three commemorative ships named in recognition of the tragic events of 9/11. Named for the county where the Pentagon is located, the USS ARLINGTON honors the memory of those whose lives were lost at the Pentagon, and the heroism of the first responders who risked their lives so others might live.

The winning design will appear in over 155,000 windshields when the 2013-2014 decals are issued next summer. All submissions received were narrowed down to four finalists by a Citizens' Panel. The four finalist designs appear below along with a description of each design written by the student.

Voting for the winning design is now open to the public. Vote for your choice by clicking one button from the list below. To see a larger image, click on the decal. Voting will close Thursday, January 24, 2013 at noon.

I edited the USS Arlington picture by converting it to black and white because I like the contrast effect of the ship. I made the stream of water behind the vessel pop with brightness to show where it is going. The contrast of black and white shows the boldness and defined structure. The USS Arlington is a warship of the future, the next generation of naval vessel continuing the USA tradition of naval strength and superiority.

For my decal submission, I replaced the sky in one of the given pictures for one of my own pictures that was of a sunset. For me, the sunset symbolized moving forward. Each sunset brings the start of a new era. The sunset with the USS Arlington shows and evokes a feeling of pride in where we live.

My dad lost a friend in one of the towers on 9/11. This was a high school friend, a teammate, and a victim. Arlington is proud of the military, and of the men and women who died in the Pentagon and in the field. We are also proud to have our name on the USS Arlington, and should commemorate its naming by carrying it on our cars. That way, anywhere we drive in Virginia or any other state, Arlingtonians can show their support for all those affected by 9/11.

My submission is a patriotic tribute to the USS Arlington. I have incorporated not only the ship, but also several patriotic symbols such as a bald eagle and fireworks.
