Although requirements to run for office differ somewhat for local, state and federal offices, the basic requirement is one must be qualified to vote for the office one is seeking, and have been a resident of the Commonwealth of Virginia for at least one year prior to the election date.
The candidate filing deadline for independent candidates and party candidates not nominated by a primary who wish to be on the November ballot is always 7:00 p.m. on the second Tuesday in June. The deadline for primary candidates is usually mid-April. Please see the appropriate candidate information bulletin for specific dates and more information.
