Minimum Qualifications for Deputy Sheriff I (Trainee)

  1. Education: Must have graduated from High School or possess a GED equivalent
  2. Age Limit: Must be 21 years of age at time of appointment or within three months of the 21st birthday on the closing date for receipt of applications
  3. Physical Condition: Must be in excellent physical condition
  4. Citizenship: Must be a U.S. Citizen at time of application.
  5. Bondable: Must be bondable for handling Commonwealth funds.
  6. Valid Driver's License: Must possess a valid driver's license from the applicant's place of residence
  7. Emergency Calls: Must be available for emergency calls and standby duty.
  8. Rotating Shift: Must be able to work rotating 12 hour shifts.
  9. Special Requirements: The position requires that the employee be available for emergency calls, standby duty, 12 hour shifts, overtime, and details outside the facility. It will include work on days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays and rotating shifts. Employees must successfully complete the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Academy within the first 12 months of employment. Successful completion includes passing all phases of academic, physical, driver and firearms training. In-service maintenance training and semi-annual firearms qualifications are ongoing training criteria.
  10. All new uniformed (sworn) Sheriff's Office employees must be non-smokers and will be required to sign an agreement that they will not smoke on or off the job during their tenure of employment.

Examination Requirements

Examination may include one or more of the following:

  1. Written Examination
  2. Polygraph Examination
  3. Psychological Examination
  4. Medical Examination (will include chest x-ray and drug/alcohol test)
  5. Character/Background Investigation to include a criminal history inquiry. NOTE: Candidates who have engaged in any activity that would support a felony conviction are unlikely to receive favorable consideration. Misdemeanor convictions for crimes relating to theft, domestic violence, or assault are likely to be disqualifying (incomplete and/or inaccurate information on personal history form may be cause for rejection).

  2. Shift Differential - Shift differential will be paid to full time employees who work the evening shift.
  3. Uniforms and Equipment - Uniforms and equipment will be furnished.
  4. Vacation Allowance - Full time employees are eligible for accrued vacations as follows: Thirteen days after one year; Sixteen days after three years; Nineteen and one half days after six years; twenty six days at twelve years and over.
  5. Military leave - up to fifteen working days with pay each year, provided the employee has completed six months of service.
  6. Holidays - You will receive approximately ten paid holidays each year.
  7. Sick Leave - full time employees earn four hours of sick leave for each two week pay period (thirteen days per year).
  8. Health Insurance - The County offers employees a choice of two group health insurance plans.
  9. Group Life Insurance - All full time employees are provided, at no cost to the employee, a basic amount of group life insurance.
  10. Credit Union - All employees may join the Arlington County Credit Union.

  14. Uniformed (sworn) employees of the Sheriff's Office will be provided a membership to the Virginia Sheriff's Association and the American Jail Association.
