Arlington Virginia Police Traffic Unit

 

 

The Traffic Unit is committed to maintaining the safe, efficient flow of traffic in the County. The unit accomplishes this through education and enforcement. Currently, 12 officers and six supervisors respond to various community, traffic related needs with the use of motorcycles, marked and unmarked police cruisers, and a speed monitoring trailer. Officers employ radar and laser technology to address neighborhood speeding complaints. The officers of the unit are routinely outstanding performers in regional safety campaigns such as Smooth Operator, which addresses the dangers of aggressive driving. In addition to the enforcement of state and local laws. The Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court safe driving class for teens and at various community meetings.

In addition, the Traffic Unit coordinates motor carrier inspections. Officers conduct various safety inspections on large commercial vehicles and often put unsafe vehicles out of service until repairs can be made. The unit also supplements the patrol officers by providing traffic control and scene security on major accidents, fires and/or events such as September 11, 2001.

The Traffic Unit conducts high security motorcades for The President and other high profile dignitaries. These assignments require advanced training and detailed planning with multiple jurisdictions including the United States Secret Service and The State Department.
