Has your neighborhood experienced a number of burglaries; a “rash” of larceny from vehicles or suspicious persons knocking on your door, asking for a donation? How do you pass this information onto the neighborhood so everyone can be informed? With the modern age of communication, most neighborhoods/Civic Associations in Arlington County have “listservs” in which important information can be distributed. This is the most direct and efficient way to ensure that your community is informed as to what is going on, especially when it has to do with crime. To take the place of the old neighborhood watch program is the “new” neighborhood watch program which makes it possible for the Police Department to communicate quickly and effectively with residents. The means to do so is called a listserv which communicates with you through e-mail. Take a look at your Civic Association newsletter. Almost every civic association has what is known as a “listserv” and easy instructions to sign on. When it comes to Crime Prevention, the “New Program” is Crime Prevention on Line (CPOL) it makes it possible for the Police Department to contact any “listserv” to publish alerts and to make neighbors aware of when certain trends are seen, such as larcenies from auto. Most “listserv” groups now on line provide crime report information to their individual neighborhoods on a regular basis along with timely and worthwhile crime prevention tips. The (CPOL) Crime Prevention on Line program makes it possible for the police department to provide prompt information on crime trends, weekly crime reports, important alerts and crime prevention tips to the neighborhood “listservs”. This program will be replacing the original Neighborhood Watch program which required a block captain to be responsible for disseminating crime information. Neighborhood Watch signs that were posted throughout the neighborhoods will be removed. As always, the police department encourages residents and businesses to report suspicious activity.
