Thank you for subscribing to The Snag and The Snag for Wee Ones the quarterly calendars of public programs offered by the Conservation & Interpretation Section: Gulf Branch Nature Center, Long Branch Nature Center, Fort C.F. Smith Park and the Park Ranger Unit.

Join us as we discover autumn wildflowers, vibrant colors, fall migrants and all the other welcome harbingers of autumn. Get active and involved at a volunteer day or join us on a foray to observe the richness of natural and historic resources in our area. We’ve got tons of indoor and outdoor activities for adults, kids and families. Whether you are looking for quality family programs or active adult forays, we have a hands-on educational program that is just right for you. Let us open the door to lifelong learning about Arlington’s wonderful natural and historic resources.

Most of the programs listed in The Snag and The Snag for Wee Ones require advance registration through our Registration Office. However, some programs do not require registration and a few require registration directly with the program site. Please see the individual program descriptions for instructions. There are THREE ways to register for programs that list a program number at the end of the program description:

Woodcock Watch

Adults. This secretive and well-camouflaged bird performs a spiraling flight, accompanied by distinctive wing twittering and 'peenting' calls. Introduction to Birding

Adults and families with kids 10 and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Learn the basics of birding and the common birds found in our area. No experience necessary. We’ll review the basics of binoculars, field guides and field marks for our common birds. History

The Trees and History of Fort C.F. Smith Park

Ages 10 - Adult. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Fort C.F. Smith was one of the last Union forts built to protect Washington during the Civil War. Today it is the home of the largest tree in Arlington County as well as other state and county champion trees. We'll learn about the park’s history and nature during this walking tour of the park. Robert Hansen: Spy

Adults. The infamous spy and traitor Robert Hanssen worked in secrecy all around the nation's capital for years before being discovered. Some of those clandestine affairs were conducted right here in the woods of Long Branch Nature Center. Join us as we unfold the dramatic story of this notorious spy, the damage he caused our nation, and his eventual downfall and arrest, including the FBI's nature center operations. Antietam Battlefield Tour

Adults. A Certified Battlefield guide will lead us on a 2 1/2 hour tour of the battlefield. Learn about the course of the battle and how it was fought. Chancellorsville Battlefield Tour

Spring Plant Sale

Adults. Join us for our highly anticipated native plant sale! The vast majority of our plants are propagated on site. There will be a variety of spring and summer bloomers along with ferns, vines and shrubs. Cardboard boxes will be provided for transporting your new purchases. Rain date: Sunday, April 26, 1-3pm. Take Action - Remove Invasives!
Adults and teens. No registration needed. Spend more time outside and help improve the environment. Become a trained volunteer who keeps a special patch of the park free of noxious invasive plants. Join others a time or two, then step up to a small area of your own to maintain. Your reward? Seeing the steady recovery and return of healthy trees, wildflowers and wildlife. Project Learning Tree

Adults. Project Learning Tree (PLT) is an interdisciplinary, award winning environmental education program designed by educators for educators. PLT's mission is to increase understanding of our environment, and to stimulate critical and creative thinking as well as develop the ability to make informed decisions on environmental issues. PLT activities help students connect classroom concepts to the real world through a variety of hands-on activities. Participants will receive a copy of the PLT Pre K-8 Environmental Education Activity Guide packed with 96 multi-disciplinary activities - each tailored to specific grade levels and learning objectives. Trillium Trek

Adults. Travel to Linden, VA to see one of the largest (millions!) Great White Trillium displays in the world! This area is resplendent with many (often rare) wildflowers and trees, including native orchids and a variety of wildlife to observe. On the somewhat rocky two-mile trail we’ll discuss plant folklore and ethnobotany. Before we head home, we’ll stop to purchase local country crafts and apple products. Washington Waterfront Kayak Trip

Teens and adults 16 and up. Beginners welcome. Change your perspective and see the city from the seat of a kayak! Launch in the Pentagon’s shadow from Columbia Island Marina in Arlington. Tides will determine route. Explore/hike Historic Roosevelt Island, paddle under the Key Bridge viewing Georgetown Waterfront. See sights along the way including: the real Watergate, Kennedy Center, Memorial Bridge, the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials. Lee Mansion and Washington’s Monument look on grandly. Single sea kayaks are provided as well as necessary gear, i.e., paddle and life vest. Participants should bring: water, sunglasses, proper clothing and sunscreen. Horseshoe Crabs by Moonlight

Adults. Venture to the Delaware shore to witness the ancient rituals of the Horseshoe Crab spawning. Look for Red Knots and other shorebirds that rely on these eggs for survival. We’ll begin Saturday with birding, then check into our B&B in Milford, DE. After dinner, we’ll head out to the beach at high tide to observe this prehistoric spectacle. Flying Squirrels

Flying Squirrel Lore & More

Join us to learn about these engaging nocturnal acrobats. After an indoor presentation, we’ll tiptoe outside to see these little pixies glide in for an evening meal. The Trees and History of Fort C.F. Smith Park

Today it is the home of the largest tree in Arlington County as well as other state and county champion trees. We'll learn about the park’s history and nature during this walking tour of the park. County Stream Clean Up

Come celebrate 22 years of protecting and conserving our watershed for future generations! The Arlington County Park Rangers are calling all volunteers to help clean up our local streams. You are invited to join us at designated sites in Bon Air, Bluemont, Glencarlyn, Barcroft and Shirlington Parks to help clean up along Four Mile Run. Or, if you would like to coordinate a clean up of another Arlington stream, give us a call and we’ll help you to get organized. This is a great activity for individuals, families, scouting groups, school groups, service clubs and anyone who wants to make a positive contribution to our environment. Volunteers should wear waterproof boots and bring work gloves. An adult must accompany children under 16 years of age. This activity is not recommended for children under six years of age. Free. "Let's Go Camping!"

Families with children ages 6 and up. Register adults and children; children must be accompanied by a registered adult. Your family is invited to join us at the Gulf Branch fire ring for this gentle introduction to camping out that's one step up from the backyard, but still close enough to home if a vital teddy-bear's been forgotten. We'll make camp, then have time for lazing about, or playing in the creek. After a delicious dinner cooked over the campfire, enjoy the embers with song and story (and of course, s'mores). The next morning we'll cook breakfast before breaking camp. B.Y.O.T. (tent) if you have one. If not, we have some loaners available for a small fee. Information: 703-228-3403. Rocks and Minerals

Tiny Tots

Ages: 18 - 35 months with adult. Tiny Tot programs provide a wonderful opportunity to interact one-on-one with your child while discovering the wonders of nature. Each fun and educational program will engage your child with hands-on learning, and may include a variety of activities like songs, crafts, finger plays and mini-hikes. Tiny Tot programs are offered throughout the year at both Gulf Branch and Long Branch Nature Centers. Each program has a theme, but themes are not published ahead of time so that we flexibility in exploring and incorporating all of the amazing and changeable aspects of the park and its wildlife into our programs. The theme for each program is repeated during the month, so please register for only one program at each nature center per month. Adults must remain during the entire program. $5 per child due upon registration.

Preschool

Ages: 3 - 5 years. Preschool programs are offered throughout the year at both Gulf Branch and Long Branch Nature Centers. The theme for preschool programs is repeated during the month, so please register for only one session at each nature center per month. Parents are invited to stay and observe, or those with younger siblings may visit the rest of the building during the program. Parents must remain on-site. $5 per child paid upon registration.

Babies in Backpacks

Families with children who can ride in a backpack. Register child only; however an accompanying adult must attend. Join a park naturalist (and her child) as we take our babes into the woods! We'll load up our little ones and head out on a moderate hike through the Long Branch and Glencarlyn parks to enjoy the sights and sounds of the great outdoors. The hike will conclude with some "down time" for the little ones to have some closer encounters with nature. Be sure to dress for the weather and bring water for both you and your little one. No strollers please; but slings, bjorns, ergo's, mei tai's, and frame carriers welcome. For more information: 703-228-6535.
