Outdoor Recreation
The approved master plan maximizes the use of the entire site and is intended to be an outstanding example of an urban park. The master plan addresses issues with the site and orients the uses in response to such issues as slopes, avigation easements (construction restrictions), height restrictions, railroad tracks, public transportation and parking. The master plan reflects the community’s consensus on the general location and approximate size of the park facilities.
The park master plan provides a combination of program elements that offer programmed and un-programmed recreational spaces. The active spaces and public gathering areas are balanced between the site’s constraints and safety issues.
The athletic fields are synthetic turf, a polyethylene fiber surface that provides all-weather traction for players. It is durable, yet has a similar feel, foot movement, ball response and appearance to natural grass.
The park’s amenities (after complete development), which include an overlook of Roaches Run Wildfowl Sanctuary, parking, restrooms, multiuse trails, landscaping, signage, athletic fields and other park lighting and public gathering areas are proposed to be of high quality reflective of Arlington County’s desire for the park to be one of its premier attractions.
