History
Aurora Hills Branch Library was founded in 1926 by the Jefferson Women's Club, was then presented to Aurora Hills Garden Club and finally to the Nellie Custis School PTA. In 1930, the County Board of Supervisors purchased and remodeled a store at 23rd and Eads Street for the library and renamed it the Martha Morton Duncan Library in honor of County Supervisor Edward Duncan's mother. One of the library's earliest volunteers recalled that she moved to the neighborhood in 1935 when one joined the library by donating a book. A bond referendum for a new library was approved in 1969; in 1978 the current building opened as a shared facility with the neighborhood recreation center, the fire department, and the visitor's center.
Today, a newly renovated Aurora Hills branch is housed in a spacious, contemporary building in the Pentagon City/Crystal City region and serves a diverse community with a collection that highlights contemporary, popular fiction and nonfiction titles. Magazines and books-on-tape are also available for borrowing. Two book discussion groups meet regularly each month as so story programs for pre-schoolers every week.
