Fight the Bite this Summer!

West Nile virus is spread to birds, humans, horses and other mammals through the bite of an infected mosquito. Most people bitten by an infected mosquito do not get sick. People who do get sick usually suffer a mild flu-like illness. People over age 50 are at greatest risk of serious illness, such as encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord). Only supportive treatment is available for more serious cases.

Protect yourself

Follow these simple steps to reduce your exposure to mosquitoes:

  • Use an effective repellent, such as DEET, Picaridin or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus. Make sure to follow label directions. Make sure door and window screens are intact. This will prevent mosquitoes from entering your home.
  • Avoid being outside during dawn and dusk. This is the time when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Dress appropriately by wearing long sleeves and pants when outdoors.
  • Drain all sources of standing water to prevent mosquitoes from breeding:
    • Turn over or remove containers in yards where rainwater collects, such as old tires, potted plant trays, boats, buckets and toys.
    • Clean out birdbaths and wading pools once a week.
    • Clean roof gutters and downspout screens regularly.
    • Eliminate standing water on tarps and flat roofs.
    • Make sure that garbage can lids are placed securely on garbage cans.
