Arlington offers a variety of options to assure a “well workplace” for its employees.  HealthSmart has evolved over a 12 year period into one of the most innovative wellness initiatives by a municipal government in the Metro-DC area.  HealthSmart plays a big role in assisting employees to reach and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Job-location opportunities for exercise include the free use of a well-equipped, state-of-the-art gym (complete with shower facilities) at Courthouse Plaza and two well-stocked, multi-purpose studios located at 2100 Clarendon Boulevard and 3100 Wilson Boulevard.  Both studios offer dance and exercise classes including Afro-Brazilian Dance, Basic Step and Abs, Belly Dancing, Cardio Kickbox, Cardio Circuit, Hi/Lo, Muscle Conditioning, Pilates, Pi/Yo, Step and Sculpt, Yoga, Yoga Sculpt and Zumba.   Click here for a description of these classes.

HealthSmart provides education classes and many other health-related services:  lunch hour Weight Watcher classes, massage therapy, wellness workshops, flu shots, and tools to help employees with healthy food choices.

HUMAN RESOURCES DEPARTMENT WINS PACESETTER AWARD

The HR Leadership Awards of Greater Washington are presented in recognition of exemplary service and organizational contributions through leadership, risk taking, innovation, vision and communication.

At a Northern Virginia Family Service's (NVFS) Annual Companies As Responsive Employers (CARE) Awards reception, Arlington County received a special Pacesetter Award for local government.

The award recognizes Arlington's effort to be an employer of choice by offering family-friendly workplace policies and benefits for its employees. County Manager Ron Carlee accepted the award on behalf of Arlington.

Carlee made the announcement to employees through the video portion of "CARleeTALK" (an innovative live video and chat session held between the County Manager and employees).   He personally thanked Human Resources Director Marcy Foster and Training Director Laura Chalkley for their efforts in making the award possible.

The County was selected because of its comprehensive benefits and training program that includes:

  • flexible work arrangements (part-time, alternative schedules, job sharing and telecommuting)
  • Health Smart, Arlington’s wellness program
  • Live Where You Work program
  • Pathways to Success development program
  • living wage program that guarantees a minimum salary of $10.98
  • transportation program that subsidizes up to 75 percent of alternative transportation costs
  • walk/bike incentive
  • dependent care assistance program

Arlington was competing against such corporate giants as Northrop Grumman, with 120,000 employees and Wachovia, the fourth largest financial institution in the United States.

Pacesetter awards are given to industry-specific leaders, recognizing certain challenges they face, such as budget limitations, legal constraints and satisfying the needs of a diverse workforce.
