Bike Arlington is a County initiative with a goal of encouraging bicycling activity throughout the County for a healthy alternative to cars. Bicycles are excellent for running errands, commuting to work, and for aerobic recreation. We encourage people to ride for better health, to relieve traffic congestion, and to save gas. |
Virtually all Arlington County information relating to pedestrians - from hard technical data to “fun stuff” and everything in between - can now be found on the WALKArlington website http://www.walkarlington.com/
In December 1998, the County Board approved the Neighborhood Traffic Calming program, which was intended to address speeding and cut-through traffic on lower volume streets in residential areas, to the benefit of pedestrians. The initiative built on that for commercial areas and along arterial streets.
The primary focus was in the Ballston – Rosslyn corridor and in particular, the busy arterial streets of Wilson and Clarendon Boulevards. Several program elements sought to change the character of those streets, to slow auto speed, and enhance the nature of the streets for pedestrians. Following the "Streets for People" Forum on July 20, 1999, the initiative was expanded to other areas. There were 11 original projects that were completed.
