Tornado Preparedness Day, March 16, 2010

March 16, 2010 is Tornado Preparedness Day in Arlington County.  Unlike hurricane season, there is no such thing as a "tornado season," and no part of the Commonwealth is immune from tornadoes.  They can hit at any time of the year and at any time of the day.

There are two things that every family, business and organization should do to get ready. Read More>>

Are you Winter Ready? Here are some tips:

  • If the power goes out and you have no heat: Depending on how well your home is insulated, and how cold it is outside, it could take as few as 4-6 hours before you would be uncomfortably cold and need blankets or sleeping bags for warmth.
  • If you must drive during a winter storm: Most traffic crashes happen within the first two hours after a storm begins. Snow plows start on roads that carry the most traffic and then move to smaller roads. Try to stay off the road to give plows time and space to work. Wait until daylight to drive so that sunlight can warm the roads. Call 511 for roads conditions or visit www.511Virginia.org. Buckle up every time you drive.

Emergency Operations Plan

To respond effectively to any emergency of a size or complexity beyond routine response systems, it is critical that all Arlington County employees, public officials, departments and agencies, non-governmental emergency organizations and the public understand their roles and responsibilities. These non-routine responsibilities begin as the incident is recognized and response ensues, and become particularly important as command organizes beyond the initial reactive phase of “first-due” responders. Outdoor Warning System

Arlington County’s outdoor warning system, funded by a grant from Homeland Security, is an integral part of the County’s redundant systems to reach the public in the event of an emergency. Find out More>>
