The Human Rights Commission holds primary responsibility to receive, investigate, and conciliate complaints from those who believe they have been victims of unlawful discrimination. This is a free public service. The Commission's investigative and hearing processes usually result in resolution of complaints. If necessary, however, the Commission can, with County Board approval, seek enforcement of its decisions in court.

The Human Rights Commission presented the Annual James B. Hunter Human Rights Award on December 9, 2010. Click here to see the recipients.

Human Rights and EEO Complaints

If you have a discrimination complaint under the Human Rights Ordinance or County EEO Policy, our office will:

•Discuss the matter with you and determine if a compliant can be filed
•Prepare an official complaint and assign the charge to an investigator
•Keep you updated on the status of the case

Equal Employment Opportunity Advisory Commission and Affirmative Action

Arlington County is an equal opportunity employer committed to pursuing equal employment opportunity in all aspects of its employment practices. The County recognizes its responsibility not to discriminate in its policies or practices against qualified employees or job applicants and will continue to pursue improvements to the quality of work life for each of its employees.
The County has adopted an Equal Employment Opportunity Policy to address diversity and inclusion within the workforce. Guided by the Equal Opportunity Policy and Administrative Regulation (A.R.) 2.9 the County prepares annually an Affirmative Action Plan (AAP)

Limited English Proficiency

Arlington County departments are required to take reasonable steps to ensure that persons with limited English proficiency have access to their programs, services and activities, regardless of federal funds. The County ensures that its services, programs and activities do not leave some residents behind, simply because they face challenges communicating in English. The requirements for language interpretation and written translation services, as well as the specific services to be provided to persons with limited English proficiency are based on the County vision of a diverse and inclusive world-class urban community.
