WHEREAS, On May 31st, the Lyon Park neighborhood will celebrate its 90th anniversary, being established in 1919;
WHEREAS, Lyon Park is recognized as one of Arlington County’s earliest 20th century planned communities with a diverse range of architectural styles and building forms which achieved historical significance as a residential community;
WHEREAS, Lyon Park is an example of one of the many residential subdivisions that emerged in Arlington County after the first World War to support the burgeoning population flocking to the nation’s capital and its suburbs;
WHEREAS, Lyon Park was one of the first Arlington County suburbs platted by developer Frank Lyon between 1919 and 1951;
WHEREAS, Lyon Park is recognized as a historic neighborhood in the National Register of Historic Places and is significant under the themes of architecture and community planning during the period extending from 1891 to 1953;
WHEREAS, Lyon Park maintains one of the oldest community-owned parks and one of the oldest community-owned public buildings, Lyon Park Community Center, in Arlington County and Northern Virginia;
WHEREAS, Lyon Park sponsors a wide range of community events, including a Halloween Bonfire, a spring fair, home and garden tours, community-wide chili dinners and pancake breakfasts, holiday parties and a tree giveaway program;
WHEREAS, Lyon Park is home to active citizen organizations, the Lyon Park Citizens Association, the Lyon Parks Woman’s Club and the Lyon Park Community Center’s Board of Governors, working to foster pride and enhance the neighborhood;
WHEREAS, it is important to celebrate the role of history in our lives and the contributions made by dedicated community members in Lyon Park in helping to preserve the aspects of the heritage that has shaped us as a people; and
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Barbara A. Favola, Chairman of the Arlington County Board, Virginia do hereby proclaim May 31, 2009, as
Lyon Park Day
and call upon the residents of Lyon Park and Arlington County to join each other in recognizing this special observance.
