Arlington Sports Commission

 

The Arlington Sports Commission is comprised of members (up to 13) that are appointed by the Arlington County Board.

Commission Meetings

Sports Commission monthly meeting dates are on Thursdays from 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. in the multipurpose room at Langston-Brown Community Center (2121 Culpeper Street, Arlington, Virginia 22207).

SPORTS COMMISSION (Reestablished March 13, 2004)

(a) the importance of sports and physical fitness programs for the health and wellbeing of all citizens,

(b) the positive impact that youth and adult recreational sports programs can have on community life,

(c) the responsibility of the County government for providing, maintaining and allocating the use of publicly-owned athletic facilities, and for ensuring that all citizens’ interests (particularly those of children, senior citizens and the disabled) are served,

(d) the need for coordination and cooperation among County government and community organizations involved in sports and physical fitness programs, to ensure that County facilities are used efficiently and cost-effectively,

(e) the interest of business organizations in promoting physical fitness programs among their employees, and in sponsoring recreational programs throughout the community,

(f) the value of a citizen body to monitor sports and physical fitness programs and make reports and recommendations on their adequacy and efficiency,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that a Sports Commission is hereby established. The Commission shall study and make reports and recommendations to the County Board from time to time as it sees fit, on:

1. The adequacy and efficiency of the County’s existing sports and physical fitness programs, including but not limited to activities offered, policies governing participation, fees charged, and relationships among various activities.

2. The adequacy and utilization of sports and physical fitness facilities, owned by Arlington County and/or Arlington Public Schools, including, but not limited to, game fields, gymnasiums, swimming pools, tennis courts, and paths and trails used by runners and bicyclists, and any other facility used for athletics.

3. The rules and policies governing participation in and the conduct of County sponsored or supported athletic activities, and the efficiency and fairness with which these rules and policies are administered.

4. The need for additional sports and physical fitness programs or facilities.

5. The involvement of the Arlington business community in sports and physical fitness programs.

6. Arlington’s participation in the development of sports and physical fitness facilities or programs on a regional or broader basis, and the use of such facilities and participation in such programs by Arlington citizens.

boy playing baseballThe Commission shall serve as a conduit for information about sports and physical fitness programs among community organizations, agencies of the County government, and this Board. It shall report promptly on any subject that may be referred to it by this Board. It may conduct public meetings, hearings, and educational programs, investigate and mediate complaints regarding the administration of sports and physical fitness programs, and publicize existing or proposed sports and physical fitness programs.

The Commission may form ad-hoc committees to address specific program and/or facility needs. The Commission shall form a permanent Aquatics Committee, which shall be chaired by a Commission member. County and school staff will continue to support this committee.

Members of the general public appointed to serve on any permanent or ad-hoc committee shall be subject to the approval of the County Board, with the exception of those members appointed by the School Board.

The Commission shall consist of thirteen members, one of whom shall be designated by this Board to serve as Chairman. Members shall be appointed for three-year terms, staggered so that no fewer than four members’ terms will expire each year. Members serving as of January 1, 2004 shall continue to serve out the terms to which they were appointed. Subsequent to this date, one additional member shall be appointed to a term expiring March 31, 2004; one additional member shall be appointed to a term expiring March 31, 2005, and two additional members shall be appointed to terms expiring March 31, 2006.

The County Manager and the Superintendent of Arlington Public Schools shall each designate a person to serve as staff liaison to the Sports Commission.
