Our Neighborhoods - Arlington Forest

The Neighborhood

Arlington Forest SignageArlington Forest is a community of more than 800 households located in west-central Arlington, bordered by Carlin Springs Road and George Mason Drive on the north, North Henderson Road, 2 nd Street north, North Pershing Drive and Arlington Boulevard on the east, and Glencarlyn Park and the W&OD trail on the south and west. Arlington Forest derives its name from the forested residential terrain and neighboring parkland, which make this community a choice for new residents as well as original homeowners of a half a century ago. Its proximity to the Ballston area provides access to shopping and the metro, while still maintaining the charm of a quiet, wooded neighborhood. Glencarlyn and Lubber Run Parks contain some of the largest remnants of natural forests in Arlington County. It is also home to the Lubber Run amphitheater, which was built in 1969, and since then has hosted dozens of performances each summer, including live theater, music, dance, and comedy. It is one of several venues that are part of Arlington County's "Arts al Fresco" program.

Arlington Forest Shopping Center

The Arlington Forest neighborhood is also home to the Arlington Forest Shopping Center . The Shopping Center was constructed in 1941, and originally contained a delicatessen, an A&P Food Store, a hardware store, a dry cleaner, a shoe repair, a beauty shop, an ESSO Gas Station and a People's Drug Store. During the strict rationing period of World War II, the shopping center was an invaluable resource to local residents who could walk there. Some original Foresters recalled that, with the shortage of rubber, some residents resorted to driving their cars on only the steel wheel rims, without tires! Three generations of the same family have been managing the drycleaning establishment since 1967. At one time the Shopping Center housed a printing company which printed "The Arlington Forester", the neighborhood's excellent monthly newsletter and the oldest civic association news bulletin in the County. The masthead of the Forester still consists of an image that was designed in 1948, showing the Arlington Forest Shopping Center at that time.
